W526 - ODDBINS WINE AUCTION - JULY 10
Oddbins July silent bid auction saw over 1600 lots of mainly premium Australian wine go under the hammer.
Whilst the market returned to the volatility of earlier months, overall prices were firm, with the main interest centred around Australian shiraz.
Highlights included Greenock Creek Roennfeldt Road shiraz 1996 - $360; magnum Henschke Hill of Grace 1986 - $700; Hill of Grace 1990 - $401; Hardys Vintage Port 1946 - $210; Moss Wood cabernet 1990 - $135; imperial Orlando Jacaranda Ridge 1989 - $600.
Penfolds Grange performed strongly, generally selling within the estimates, whilst a very good selection of Henschke Hill of Grace from the early ‘90’s attracted strong bidding selling at the upper end of the estimates.
Of the imported wines, Bordeaux from reputable vintages continues to sell strongly, as does Red Burgundy. Included in the auction was an interesting collection of Portuguese ports, many not seen in Australia, which attracted some interest. Colheita ports (single vintage wood matured tawnies) attracted strong bidding, perhaps being the ideal present or celebration wine for birthdays and anniversaries.
A rare bottle of Massandra Alupka White Port 1945, from the fabled Massandra Collection auctioned by Sotheby’s in 1990, achieved $390.
The sale saw the return to wines with a proven auction record, with a track record of longevity and proven cellaring ability, from established makers and regions.
