W527 - BRISBANE WINE AUCTION - 20 July 2002
Oddbins conducted its second live Brisbane Auction on July 20. To finalise a deceased estate, the auction was held in conjunction with leading Brisbane wine storage, Wineaway and timed to coincide with the RNA Brisbane Wine Show.
The highlight of the auction was a vertical of Penfolds Grange from 1951 - 1996, which was sold for a hammer price of $165,000, after a spirited battle between two telephone bidders.
The sale comprised a very impressive collection of premium Australian wine, of mainly recent vintages many available in depth and quantity, and was attended by approx. 150 keen and enthusiastic bidders, competing against a good ‘book’ of absentee bidders.
Highlights of the sale included Hamiltons Vintage Port 1959 - $75; Hardys Eileen Hardy shiraz 1993 - $65; Henschke Hill of Grace 1963 (HS) - $320, 1982 - $300, &1996 - $300; Mount Mary Quintets 1998 - $150; Penfolds Grange 1986 - $440, 1989 - $260, 1991 - $320; Petaluma Coonawarra cabernet merlot 1992 - $60; Wild Duck Creek Duck Muck 1995 - $800.
A successful sale, with nearly all bids in the middle or top end of the estimates, a very good clearance rate.
