Grange sold at our May 19 auction for a world record price of $27,100.
Australia’s rarest and most sought after collectable wine, the 1951 Grange was sold to a private Melbourne collector.
The final purchase price of the wine, including the 10% buyer’s premium, was $29,810.
The previous world record for the same vintage was $26,000.
Oddbins wine auctioneer, Mr Stephen Lumb, said there were many reasons why the wine brought such a high price.
"Firstly the 1951 Grange was an experimental wine and was never released commercially:, he said, "As such, there are only a limited number and rarity normally equals high prices.
"the particular bottle of the 1951 vintage is the best I have ever seen, in terms of quality, cellaring, and label condition.
"first introduced in 1951, Penfolds Grange has attracted worldwide recognition. It is Australia’s best known red wine and is sought after internationally by wine collectors.
